Until recently the scientific community in Korea has been hesitant to engage with creationists, afraid that doing so could give the movement more credibility. But silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the change in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their environment and this can lead to changes in genes, or even entire genomes. Over many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with traits that are advantageous can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. In time, this disparity in reproduction could lead to the emergence of completely new species.
The term “evolution” comes from the Latin word for unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took shape in the sciences and other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck’s disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy’s student to describe the notion that species are evolving into different species in an orderly and predictable manner.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. In time, this genetic variability can cause the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in a population. Such a shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in muscle mass from diet or exercise can’t be considered to be examples of evolution since they’re not passed on to future generations.
Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They claim that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans and Archaeopteryx – a feathered dinosaur which is believed to be the ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution explains how Earth and all its living species came to be. It also serves as a basis of biology and helps scientists learn how living organisms function and grow. Evolution also reveals the relationships between different species. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world and to make useful discoveries including the development of new medicines.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so many aspects of the universe and life on Earth and has been rigorously tested and verified over the course of many years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not conflict with religions, since the theory is based on objects, events and processes within the physical world.
Many religious people have found a way to reconcile evolution with their beliefs. For example certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral lineage with other animals.
It is crucial that science educators stand up for the teaching of evolution. In some countries, the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses and the bird ancestral Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries that can lead to the development of new treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others have an intense faith in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is God’s word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most well-known type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation was literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs are less well known however they are as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a myth.
Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require a miracle, and that the founders of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and special creation, and consider their views to be “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes referred to as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the original species.” In this view, God creates the original species and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.
Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. They believe that all species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.
In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they will remove the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this effort. STR has won its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx in textbooks. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin’s notorious finch research and on human evolution too.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individual members. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the “atheist materialism” that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has achieved many things through its seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of these was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest in the college community. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught until today.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR’s John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been delivering talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
